Printmaking Process

Each print is produced from a digital computer file which is printed on a photographic digital imaging device called the Cymbolic Sciences Lightjet 5000. The digital file is obtained by scanning an original 35mm film frame, or directly from a digital capture from a digital camera. Minor adjustments are made to the digital image to make it faithful to the scene perceived by the photographer at the instant the shutter fired. Usually, minor operations to correct color casts, brightness, and contrast are all that is required. Adjustments such as these have been employed using traditional darkroom techniques since the dawn of fine art photographic printmaking.

The Lightjet 5000 uses the information within the digital file to produce a traditional photographic print with a technologically advanced technique. Rather than using a photographic enlarger, traditional photographic silver halide paper is exposed by multicolored lasers at over 4000 lines per inch in a 36-bit (68 billion colors!) colorspace. The photographic paper is then processed in old-style wet chemistry to finalize the print. With Lightjet laser imaging the results are always consistent in both color and density and there is no fall-off of exposure to the corners as in traditional enlarging We employ a strict color management system which ensures that each print displays the color palette as intended by the photographer.

Prints produced by the Lightjet 5000 are the highest caliber photographic prints available today, exhibiting unrivaled sharpness and quality. The resulting print (on genuine Fuji paper) -- has an archival life of 70 to 160 years before noticeable fading occurs -- by far the longest lifespan on any current photographic material.

A limited number of prints are produced of each image released by Michael Pollack. Once the specified number of prints are sold, that particular image will be designated "out of print" and will no longer be available. Each print is hand-signed and hand-numbered, making your photograph a truly unique piece of art.
